Status of Residence (zairyushikaku) of International Students

Those who continue to study at school

◆ Are permitted to extend their status of residence of “Student (ryugaku).”

-An extension is available even if the student’s registered school is changed.
-Are permitted to work part-time up to 28 hours a week after getting a “Permission to Engage in Work Other Than That Permitted Under the Status of Residence (shikakugaikatsudo)” permit.
-Students at a Japanese language school are allowed to continue their studies at the school past the two-year limit.
(“Student” status must be extended in that case.)

Those who are unable to return to their home country after graduating from school

◆ Are permitted to change their status of residence to “Designated Activities (tokuteikatsudo) (6 Months).”

– Those who wish to work are allowed to work part-time up to 28 hours a week
(without a “Permission to Engage in Work Other Than That Permitted Under the Status of Residence” permit).
-Another change is available for those who have changed their status of residence from “Student” to “Temporary Visitor (tankitaizai)” or “Designated Activities (6 Months, Work NOT Permitted)” due to the inability to return to their home country.
-A dependent of an international student or a former international student is permitted to change their status of residence.

◆ Those whose “Student” status is still valid and who have received a “Permission to Engage in Work Other Than That Permitted Under the Status of Residence” permit are allowed to work part-time up to 28 hours a week even after graduating from school.

Students who have obtained a job in Japan which they will engage in after graduating from school

◆ Are permitted to change their status of residence to “Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services (gijutsu/jinbunchisiki/kokusaigyomu),” etc. if they meet certain conditions.

Those who wish to job-hunt in Japan after graduating from school

(*Limited to those who have graduated from a university/college or technical college and who have finished a postsecondary course [senmon katei] of a specialized training college)

◆ Are permitted to job-hunt for a year after graduating from school by getting their status of residence changed to “Designated Activities.”

-Are permitted to continue job-hunting in Japan even after the above-mentioned one year if their status gets extended.
-Are permitted to work part-time up to 28 hours a week after getting a “Permission to Engage in Work Other Than That Permitted Under the Status of Residence” permit.
