Status of Residence (zairyushikaku) of Technical Intern Trainees (ginojisshusei)

Those who are unable to return to their home country/to continue their technical intern training

●Those who are unable to return to their home country

◆Are permitted to change theirstatus of residence to “Designated Activities (tokuteikatsudo) (6 Months, Work Permitted)” or “Designated Activities (6 Months, Work NOT Permitted)”.

-An extension will be given if the unable-to-return-home situation continues.

A change to “Designated Activities (6 Months, Work Permitted)” is permitted only when a trainee is engaged in the same work as before or related work. (Training site may be changed.)
Trainees may job-hunt on “Designated Activities (6 Months, Work NOT Permitted)” visas.
Once a job is found, they are permitted to change their status of residence to “Designated Activities (6 Months, Work Permitted)”.
●Those who have become unable to work at the same training site
●Those who are unable to return to their home country after having completed the technical intern training (ginojisshu)

◆If trainees are unable to find a new training site, they are permitted to change their status of residence to “Designated Activities (Maximum of 1 Year, Work Permitted).”

-Are allowed to engage in another type of work (out of 14 categories only, including nursing care and agriculture).

*There are certain conditions to be met, such as being a person who intends to continue working to acquire skills that would entitle them to work on a “Specified Skilled Worker (tokuteigino)” visa.

Those who will continue to receive technical intern training in Japan

●Those who are unable to progress to the next level of training due to the inability to take a skill evaluation exam

◆Are permitted to change their status of residence to “Designated Activities (4 Months, Work Permitted)” until they are able to take the exam and move to the next level.

*Available only when engaged in the same work as before at the same training site.

●Those who are not prepared to advance to “Specified Skilled Worker (i),”even though “Technical Intern Training (ii)/(iii) ” is about to end

◆Are permitted to change their status of residence to “Designated Activities (4 Months, Work Permitted)” while preparations are being made for the advancement.

(Once trainees are ready to make such an advancement, they are permitted to change their status of residence to “Specified Skilled Worker (i).”)
*Available only when engaged in the same work as before at the same training site.

●Those who wish to move up to “Technical Intern Training (iii)” as “Technical Intern Training (ii) ” is about to end.

◆Are permitted to change their status of residence to “Technical Intern Training (iii).”

*Available only when their supervising organization (kanridantai) (that supports the technical intern training) or company that provides such training is recognized to be “excellent/very good.” Please inquire with the company or the supervising organization.
